A washer dryer is a single machine that washes and dries your clothes without you needing to move them. You load it once, set it going, and come back to dry laundry.

It fits in the same space as a standard washing machine, which makes it a popular choice for smaller homes, flats, and anyone who does not have room for two separate appliances.

This is the single most misunderstood thing about washer dryers. The wash capacity and the dry capacity are not the same.

If you fill the drum to wash, you will need to remove roughly half the load before drying, or run two drying cycles. Most customers do not realise this until they get the machine home.

A washer dryer suits you if you are short on space, live alone or as a couple, dry clothes occasionally rather than daily, or simply want the convenience of one machine doing everything.

Separate machines may be better if you have a large family, do frequent heavy washing, or dry clothes every day. Two machines will be more efficient and more capable in the long run.

Drying cycles in a washer dryer tend to take longer than a dedicated tumble dryer. That is normal and worth factoring in if timing matters to your routine.

In 2021 the energy label scale was reset across the UK and EU. The old A+++ rating no longer exists. Everything was rescored so a new A-rated machine is genuinely the most efficient available.

Drying uses considerably more energy than washing, so the energy rating on a washer dryer matters more than on a washing machine alone. A heat pump model will make a noticeable difference to your bills over time.
