Barlows has been repairing appliances since 1948 — it's how the business started. Our in-house repair centre at Clifford House in Malpas is staffed by our own fully qualified engineers, equipped to fix everything from washing machines and fridge freezers to LED TVs, phones, and Kenwood mixers.
About the service
In-house repairs by our own engineers
Unlike many retailers who outsource repairs to third parties, our team of five engineers — two on the road and three based at our repair centre — work directly for us. They have access to over one million spare parts and accessories, and the experience to diagnose and fix a wide variety of products safely and efficiently.
We repair products from all manufacturers, including competitor own-brand models, as long as parts are available. If your appliance is covered by a manufacturer guarantee or an extended warranty, there should be no cost to you. For out-of-warranty repairs, our engineers will always advise you honestly on whether a repair is cost-effective before any chargeable work is carried out.

Our engineers cover a broad range of domestic appliances and electronics:
- Large appliances — washing machines, tumble dryers, washer dryers, dishwashers, fridge freezers, American-style fridge freezers, cookers, and ovens.
- Small appliances — kettles, toasters, irons, vacuum cleaners, food processors, and more.
- TVs and entertainment — LED TVs, Freeview boxes, DVD players, and audio equipment.
- Phones and tablets — screen replacements, charging port repairs, and various other fixes for most models including Apple products.
How it works
Getting your appliance repaired
There are three ways to get your repair to us:
- Drop it into either store. Bring your item to our Ellesmere or Whitchurch shop and we'll get it across to the repair centre.
- Bring it directly to the repair centre. You can bring items straight to Clifford House, Hampton Heath, Malpas, Cheshire, SY14 8LU.
Once the item is with us, our engineers will assess it, check parts availability, and determine whether a repair is cost-effective. If it's uneconomical to fix, we'll return the item to you — usually at no charge.
Pricing & estimates
Repair costs and thresholds
Each product type has a fixed cost threshold. If the repair comes in below the threshold, our engineers will carry out the work automatically. If the cost is above it, we'll contact you with an estimate for approval before proceeding.
Large appliances
Threshold: £45Washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, fridge freezers, cookers, and ovens. Estimate supplied if the total cost exceeds £45.
TVs & entertainment
Threshold: £45LED TVs, Freeview boxes, DVD players, and audio equipment. Estimate supplied if the total cost exceeds £45.
Small appliances
Threshold: £20Kettles, toasters, irons, vacuum cleaners, food processors, and similar items. Estimate supplied if the total cost exceeds £20.
Phones & tablets
Threshold: £25Screen replacements, charging ports, and other repairs for most models including Apple. Estimate supplied if the total cost exceeds £25.
All repairs are carried out by our own in-house fully qualified engineers. Parts are guaranteed for 90 days unless otherwise stated.
Guarantees & warranties
If your appliance is still under warranty
If your appliance is covered by a manufacturer guarantee or an extended warranty, the repair should be carried out at no cost to you. There are a few things to be aware of:
- Any appliance with a guarantee exceeding 12 months must be registered within 28 days of receipt to qualify for the additional cover.
- Guarantees apply to domestic use only — commercial or trade use is not covered.
- The appliance must have been used in accordance with the instruction book and not modified or repaired by an unauthorised person.

Here at Barlows Electrical Retail LTD we pride ourselves on giving you the best customer service both before and after the product is purchased from ourselves. Which is why we offer a in house repair service based at our Head Office in Malpas, Cheshire. We have a team of engineers who are able to fix a wide variety of products safely and efficiently.
We have two domestic appliance engineers on the road and three in house service engineers so we are on hand to get your appliance fixed as quickly and as hassle free as possible. In today’s world with complex electronics it is inevitable that sometimes things will go wrong, although if this is covered by a manufacturer guarantee or extended warranty policy then there should be no expense to yourself but without such guarantee repairs can sometimes be costly. If you do have a problem with a particular product Barlows will advise you on the best course of action to take, whether it be a LED TV, Table lamp or an American style fridge freezer we are here to help.
We endeavour to repair all manufacturers products that come into us including competitor own brand models as long as parts are available. You can bring your items into either of our retail stores or alternatively directly to our repair centre at Clifford House. If this is not convenient we also offer a call out service to collect your items for repair.
When you bring an item for repair our engineers will assess the situation and determine whether or not they can get the parts and also whether it is cost effective to fix your appliance as sometimes repair costs can be more expensive than buying a new equivalent model. If they find it to be uneconomical for your product to be repaired they will return your item usually with no charge to yourself.
Depending on the type of product brought in the engineers have a fixed limit that they work to before contacting you with an estimate for authorisation to continue with fixing your item. This gives you peace of mind that you won’t get a nasty shock when the item is returned. You can find a list of what we do below and the limits the engineers work to.
Our engineers also offer a repair service for most models of phones and tablets including Apple products. This service includes new screens, charging ports and various other repairs. We are still able to repair Kenwood mixers including some of the very early models some of which are over 40 years old. So before you throw away your old appliance check with us to see.
