The right TV size depends on how far away you sit from the screen. As a general guide, multiply your viewing distance in metres by 40 to get the ideal screen size in centimetres — or divide by 2.5 to get inches.

32"–42" — ideal for bedrooms or smaller rooms with a viewing distance of 1.5 to 2 metres.

43"–54" — the most popular size for living rooms with a viewing distance of 2 to 2.5 metres.

55"–65" — suits larger living rooms or open-plan spaces with a viewing distance of 2.5 to 3 metres.

75" and above — cinematic viewing for large rooms with ample distance from the screen.

LED TVs use a backlit LCD panel. They are the most affordable and widely available option — a solid choice for most households and rooms with moderate lighting.

QLED TVs (used by Samsung and TCL) enhance the LED backlight with quantum dot technology, producing brighter, more vivid colours. Excellent in well-lit rooms and ideal for sport and gaming.

OLED TVs (used by LG, Sony, and others) have individually lit pixels that can switch off completely, producing perfect blacks and exceptional contrast. The best picture quality available, particularly in darker rooms. More expensive but a worthwhile investment for serious film and TV viewers.

Almost all TVs sold today are Smart TVs, meaning they connect to your home Wi-Fi and give you access to streaming services like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and YouTube directly on the TV — no separate box needed.

If you already use a streaming stick or box (like a Fire TV Stick or Apple TV), a Smart TV's built-in apps may be redundant for you. But for most households, Smart TV functionality is genuinely useful and is now effectively the standard.

Soundbars are a single unit that sits below or in front of your TV and delivers significantly better audio than built-in TV speakers. They are easy to set up, tidy, and suit most living rooms. Many include a subwoofer for added bass and some support virtual surround sound.

Full surround sound systems use multiple speakers placed around the room to create a true cinematic audio experience. They require more space, more cabling, and more setup, but the result is genuinely immersive. Best suited to dedicated home cinema rooms or those who prioritise audio quality above all else.

For most households, a quality soundbar with a subwoofer is the practical and cost-effective choice.

Freeview receives free-to-air digital TV channels via a rooftop aerial. It is the most common form of free TV in the UK and is built into most modern TVs. You need a good aerial signal — this can vary depending on your location in Shropshire.

Freesat receives free-to-air channels via a satellite dish. It offers a broader range of channels than standard Freeview, a more consistent signal regardless of location, and is a good alternative if your aerial reception is poor. Both services are free with no ongoing subscription.

Wall mounting saves floor space, gives a clean modern look, and lets you position the screen at the ideal viewing height. It does require drilling into the wall and routing cables neatly — something to consider in rented properties or older buildings.

TV stands are simpler, more flexible, and require no installation. They are a good choice if you want the option to move the TV, or if wall mounting is not practical. A dedicated TV stand also provides storage for other devices.
